The first call is usually made by an adult child who has never toured a senior living community in their life. That is normal. Here is where most Northeast Ohio families get stuck.
Two Buildings, Two Different Licenses
Ohio licenses assisted living communities as residential care facilities, regulated separately from nursing homes. A residential care facility can provide accommodation, supervision, personal care, and only a limited amount of skilled nursing. That ceiling is the single most important thing to understand before you choose, because it determines how long your loved one can stay. The brochures almost never mention it. We do.
The Money Question Nobody Answers Clearly
Private pay rates, level-of-care add-ons, and community fees are often quoted separately or not at all. We help you see the full monthly number and walk through what long-term care insurance, VA Aid and Attendance, or Ohio Medicaid may cover.

Assisted Living
In Ohio, assisted living communities are licensed by the Ohio Department of Health as residential care facilities. They provide housing, supervision, and personal care such as help with bathing, dressing, medications, and meals, along with a limited amount of skilled nursing. That last limit matters. The real question is not only whether your loved one qualifies today, but whether the same community can still care for them in two years.
Memory Care
Memory care serves people living with Alzheimer's or another dementia, usually from the middle stages onward. In Northeast Ohio you will find memory care as a secured wing inside a larger community and as smaller standalone settings. Both use controlled entries, enclosed outdoor paths, and staff trained specifically in dementia behaviors. The right fit often comes down to size and staffing ratio rather than amenities.
Independent Living
Independent living is for older adults who do not need hands-on care but are tired of maintaining a house. Snow removal, yard work, and stairs push a lot of Northeast Ohio families toward this option before any health event happens. Residents get their own apartment plus meals, transportation, and social programming. Medical services are not included, though many campuses offer higher levels of care on the same property.
Nursing Homes
A nursing home, or skilled nursing facility, provides round the clock medical care for people with serious chronic conditions or significant physical dependence. Care is delivered by licensed nurses, therapists, physicians, and social workers. Short rehabilitation stays after a hospitalization are often covered by Medicare, while long stays are typically paid privately or through Ohio Medicaid once a person qualifies. This is the level of care a residential care facility is not licensed to provide.
In-Home Care
Home services fall into two categories that families frequently confuse. In-home care is non-medical help with bathing, meals, housekeeping, transportation, and companionship. Home health care is clinical work ordered by a physician and delivered by licensed nurses or therapists, and it is often covered by Medicare for a limited period. Knowing which one you need determines both the cost and who pays for it.
Respite Care
Respite care is a short stay in a senior living community, anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Families use it when a caregiver needs surgery, a vacation, or simply a break before burning out completely. The resident receives the same daily support, medication management, meals, and activities as a permanent resident. Many Northeast Ohio families also use respite as a low pressure trial run before committing to a move.
What Care Actually Costs in Northeast Ohio
Roughly seven in ten people will need some form of long-term care in their lifetime. Very few plan for it before the need arrives.
Costs in this region have climbed steadily and vary widely by county. In 2026, Ohio medians run about $6,103 per month for assisted living, $7,600 per month for memory care, and $9,186 per month for a semi-private nursing home room.
