Home health care and in-home care are not the same thing, and understanding the difference can make a big difference for families.

Home health provides skilled medical services, such as nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. It is typically ordered by a doctor after an event such as a hospitalization or fall and may be covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance when eligibility requirements are met.

Visits are generally short and focused on a specific skilled need, often lasting 30–45 minutes and taking place over a limited period of time.

But home health isn't designed to provide ongoing daily caregiving or long-term supervision.

Understanding what home health does, what it covers, and how long it typically lasts can help families plan for the care that may be needed after those services end.
