Hurricane Helene (September 2024) was the most destructive disaster in NC history — causing catastrophic flooding, landslides, and infrastructure destruction across western NC. Dozens of communities were cut off, over 100 NC residents were killed, and tens of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. NC Recovers coordinates long-term disaster recovery through government agencies, nonprofits, faith communities, and volunteer organizations. Key recovery resources include: NC DHHS disaster behavioral health programs, FEMA Individual Assistance, SBA disaster loans, and the Western NC Hurricane Helene Recovery Fund (Community Foundation of WNC). Recovery efforts are expected to continue for years.
