The Mary Queen of Vietnam CDC is a nationally recognized community development and advocacy organization born from the Vietnamese American Catholic community in New Orleans East. The Versailles neighborhood (Village de l'Est) was resettled by Vietnamese refugees through Catholic and Lutheran church programs after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and became one of the most cohesive and resilient refugee communities in America. MQVN CDC became nationally famous when it led community rebuilding and fought to reopen the Chef Menteur landfill after Hurricane Katrina — a landmark environmental justice campaign. MQVN CDC provides elder services for aging Vietnamese seniors, youth development, community organizing, and health access programs. It is one of the most-studied post-Katrina community development models in America.
