Being a long-distance caregiver can make it incredibly difficult to see what's really happening with your parents.

A phone call can make everything sound fine. But what you don't see are the day-to-day changes happening inside their home.

Maybe Mom isn't getting around like she used to. Maybe the house isn't being kept up. Maybe she's going to the doctor more often or starting to fall.

And sometimes parents don't tell us because they don't want to be a burden, especially when they know we're already juggling children, work, and our own families.

That's why an in-person visit can reveal things you simply can't see from another state.

Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a hospitalization or another crisis before a family realizes just how much has changed.

If you're caring for a parent from a distance, don't wait for a crisis to find out what's really going on. Start paying attention to the little changes and start planning early.
